The Story

The film is set in the seaside-sounding town of Bayleen Bay, where strange incidents begin to ruin the residents' idyllic summer in bloody fashion. The cause is a newcomer: Jonathan Smiley, played by Ari Millen, a vendor whose sweet treats turn the town's children into homicidal maniacs. The fun-loving kids who once chased his truck down the street become a roaming, giggling horde, and their parents are the first victims.

As the suburb unravels, a handful of people are left unaffected. Among them is Jared (Charlie Zeltzer), who is lactose intolerant and so avoided the dairy-based poison, which makes him one of the last hopes of ending the nightmare. The cast also includes Shiloh O'Reilly as Tommy and Kiori Mirza Waldman as Mia. The survivors are outnumbered by children they once babysat, taught or grew up beside, and they have to decide how far they'll go when the monsters are kids.

The Review

Ice Cream Man is a high-concept pitch, and Roth clearly wanted a loud, gleefully tasteless summer horror-comedy. It's billed as a black comedy slasher, and the premise is easy to sell in one sentence: poisoned dessert, killer children, an ice cream truck as the engine of a plague. It also has a lean runtime of 86 minutes, which suits a film built on a single joke.

Whether the joke sustains a feature is where critics split. One German outlet's preview called it pure Eli Roth, a hyperactive slaughter close to a gore sugar rush. That's a fair description of its appeal: the film seems to want to be a sticky, excessive party, and its marketing leaned hard into that, including a Comic-Con activation that handed out themed treats.

The harsher reviews are pointed, though. One reviewer found it stiff, sloppily edited and nearly plotless, said the story never shifts into a higher gear, and felt Ari Millen was wasted in the title role. That last complaint stings, because Millen is the film's most interesting asset. He's a strong genre actor, and a villain who is essentially a salesman with a sinister smile should be a gift. If the script gives him little to do beyond lurking behind a truck window, a lot of the potential goes unused. The "deranged vendor" idea leans on charisma, and the film seems to rely on the concept to do work that character writing should do.

The tone seems to be another issue. Horror-comedy is a tightrope. It needs the audience to laugh while still fearing for the characters, and the best examples build real dread so the jokes hit harder. Reports suggest Ice Cream Man leans toward gag after gag, which can make the violence feel weightless. Child villains add another problem. Killer kids are inherently unnerving, but a film has to use them with some discipline. Otherwise they become a swarm of interchangeable extras with matching grins.

On the plus side, the lactose-intolerant hero is a good bit of absurdist logic. It gives the story a clever rule for who survives, and a film this silly should lean into that kind of rule rather than apologize for it. The soundtrack also stands out, with Snoop Dogg providing music, an oddly fitting choice for a movie about a summer ice cream truck. That's the kind of pop-culture mischief a film like this thrives on.

The commercial result was modest. It opened in 1,761 US theaters on August 7, 2026, grossed about $1 million on its opening and about $7.6 million worldwide by the end of August. That's a soft showing, and it was competing in the same stretch as Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It also isn't connected to the 1995 Clint Howard film of the same name, so don't expect a remake or sequel in the usual sense.

Verdict: Ice Cream Man is a quick, crude, high-concept slasher that will suit viewers who want a cheerful bloodbath and don't care much about plot or characters. If you need strong writing, sustained tension or a fully used lead performance, the reviews suggest you'll leave hungry. I'd call it a rental-night curiosity: fun in bursts, forgettable as a whole. Rough rating: 2 to 2.5 out of 5, based on the critical reception I could find and not on having seen it myself.
