Story (spoiler-light)
The film moves away from the Lambert family and follows Gemma, a dental hygienist and single mother who returns to the house where she grew up. She is trying to give her nine-year-old daughter Maya a stable life, but her recurring nightmares and unresolved childhood trauma come from her ability to travel into the Further. Gemma grew up afraid of a mother who behaved erratically and later died by suicide. In the Further she meets Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) and learns she is a "Courier", someone who can bring objects, and also ghosts and demons, in and out of the Further. That makes the supernatural threat much bigger, because the demons want back into our world.
Review
Critics are split, and most land in the middle.
- What works: The best sequence is a chilling scene in Gemma's dental clinic, and Common Sense Media also singles out a gross-out dentist scene and a character lost in a pillow fort. The performances are solid, and the film keeps enough of the franchise's signature chills. Some reviewers call Elise the best part of the film.
- What doesn't: The mythology becomes convoluted and the film gets bogged down in exposition, so the rules of the Further now feel predictable. The story is hokey and lacks the raw emotion of the original's Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne performances.
- Overall: One review gives it 3/5, calling it not the franchise's best but good enough to sustain it. One reviewer thinks it is one of the strongest entries in the series, while others see a tired franchise running out of ideas.
My verdict: about 3/5. It's a decent, jump-scare-driven chapter for fans of the series, with a fresh family and a few memorable scenes, but it doesn't reinvent the Insidious formula.
