Udta Teer: story and setup
Udta Teer is a Hindi spy comedy about an amnesiac undercover operative stranded on the zero-line border between India and Pakistan. The trailer fills in the rest. Ayushmann Khurrana plays Bilal, a Pakistani spy who loses his memory after an explosion and starts believing he is an Indian counter-terrorism officer. The tagline plays on this: he remembers his patriotism but not which country it belongs to.
The official synopsis describes a world where everyone has a secret and nobody can be trusted, where one spy accidentally turns the whole game upside down. So Bilal doesn't know who he is, and he is also in the middle of a high-stakes operation. His mistaken loyalty makes him dangerous to his old handlers and valuable, or at least useful, to his new ones. Sara Ali Khan plays the female lead, and the cast also includes Mukul Dev, Ram Kapoor and Raghubir Yadav.
I'm leaving out the ending and the later twists because I don't know them and won't invent them. Khurrana has said that just when you think you know where the story is headed, it takes a new turn.
Review: what to expect
The concept. The idea is strong and well suited to a mainstream comedy. A spy who switches sides without knowing it gives the writers constant material for mistaken identity, awkward loyalty tests and dramatic irony, because the audience knows more than the hero does. One outlet compared the premise to social media's "POV: Pakistani Spy in India" skits, which suggests a self-aware, meme-literate tone rather than a flag-waving thriller. Spy comedy is also a genre that has been less frequently explored in mainstream Hindi cinema compared with straight action spy films, so the film has room to feel fresh.
The lead. Khurrana has built a career on offbeat, high-concept comedies, and this role suits him. A man whose confident patriotism is built on a false identity is the kind of earnest-but-confused character he usually plays well. The risk is that he has played this register often, so the film needs to give him something new. Sara Ali Khan is the other question. Their earlier pairing was in Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, and the real test is whether her role has weight in the plot or is mainly the romantic or comic foil.
The director. This is Akash A. Kaushik's debut. He has written for comedies including Thank God and Housefull 4. That suggests he knows how to build set pieces and punchlines, but it also raises the usual concern about writers turned directors: a film can be funny scene by scene and still lose shape across a 2 hour 17 minute runtime. Spy comedies in particular need tight pacing, because the plot twists have to land as surprises and not feel arbitrary.
The cross-border angle. The film's biggest challenge may be tone. Jokes about India and Pakistan can easily turn into either jingoism or a mild satire that avoids saying anything. The trailer framing, a comic hero whose identity is a mistake, points toward satire of patriotism-as-performance rather than the real politics of espionage. Whether the film commits to that satire or retreats into safe flag-waving is something only the finished film will answer.
Music and craft. Sachin-Jigar is composing, and the soundtrack includes a track featuring Emiway Bantai, so expect energetic, playlist-friendly songs. Whether they fit the story or interrupt it is a common weakness in Bollywood spy films.
A note on Mukul Dev. Reports say this is the late actor's final film. He died in May 2025, and the team said at the trailer launch that this is his best work. That gives his scenes some extra interest for audiences.
Preliminary verdict
On paper, Udta Teer has a good hook, a leading man in his comfort zone, an experienced comedy writer behind it, and a supporting cast of veteran character actors. The questions are the usual ones for a first-time director's comedy: pacing, whether the second half keeps the first half's momentum, and whether the satire has any edge.
If the film pulls off its mix of action and comedy, it could be one of the more enjoyable family entertainers of the festive season. If it settles for repeating the amnesia joke, it will feel thin well before the 137 minutes are up. I'd call it a promising premise with execution still to be judged.
