The Story
Ustaad Bhagat Singh is a Telugu action drama directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Mythri Movie Makers. It stars Pawan Kalyan alongside Sreeleela, Raashii Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, Nawab Shah and Gautami. The music is by Devi Sri Prasad and Thaman, and the film reached theatres around Ugadi.
The story is set in a village near the Nallamala forest. A respected teacher named Chandrasekhar, played by K.S. Ravikumar, enters politics and becomes Chief Minister on the strength of his integrity. Along the way he takes in a young boy, names him Ustaad Bhagat Singh, and helps him grow into an educated young man with a strong social conscience. The boy grows up to be a police officer who fights evil forces, while his mentor rises to the top office of the state.
The conflict comes from a rival. Nalla Nagappa, played by Parthiban, has risen through crime. He assassinates Chandrasekhar and takes over as Chief Minister. Nagappa's son Vicky then disappears in the Nallamala forest during a drug-related trip, and it later emerges that Ustaad is behind it. From there the film explores what led to the attack on the CM and how Bhagat and Nagappa are connected. The official synopsis adds that after the murder of his family by old enemies, an IPS officer and his daughter fake their deaths. The remaining questions are how the two heroines fit into Ustaad's life and whether he can keep the promise he made to his mentor.
The Review
What works
The film's biggest asset is its star. Reviewers say Pawan Kalyan's look and styling here is among his best in recent years. One early viewer on social media called it the most fun version of the actor since Gabbar Singh and Attarintiki Daredi, and described the first half as entertaining and engaging. Another review also says the first half has plenty of drama and funny moments, and that the action and the face-off with the villain rescue an otherwise familiar narrative. K.S. Ravikumar, usually seen in comic roles, gives a mature performance as the teacher turned Chief Minister, and the production values from Mythri Movie Makers are good as always.
For fans of the Pawan Kalyan and Harish Shankar combination, the film delivers mass moments built around the hero's entry, his swagger and his confrontations. Gulte's review says the film has a few moments that fans and the mass audience will like.
What doesn't
The criticism centres on the script. One reviewer calls the story routine, with fan-centric elements instead of innovation and several unnecessary scenes. Although it isn't a remake of Theri, the main plot will remind many viewers of that Vijay film. Another review says the situations recall several earlier Telugu hits, and that this is where the director fell short.
The harshest verdict comes from Deccan Chronicle, which gave it 1.5 out of 5. It says the hero takes on religious tensions, terrorism and political corruption all at once, so the narrative becomes crowded and loses focus. It also says the childhood episode slows the film and the references to Bhagat Singh feel superficial, there mainly to justify the title. It adds that the director leans too heavily on formulaic hero-elevation scenes instead of building a gripping story. The music has also drawn criticism: Gulte calls Devi Sri Prasad's album mediocre.
Overall Verdict
The reception was mixed. Early reactions ranged from praise for the entertainment value to complaints about a weak plot. The film works best as a star vehicle. If you enjoy Pawan Kalyan's screen presence, stylised action and a clear good-versus-evil showdown, you'll probably find enough to enjoy, especially in the first half. If you want a fresh story, tight writing or emotional depth, critics suggest you'll be disappointed. The title promises a reformist, Bhagat Singh-style cop, but the film is mostly the familiar hero-elevation formula.
