Street Fighter (2026): Story
The film is set in 1993, the peak of the arcade era, and is a reboot with no ties to the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme film or The Legend of Chun-Li. It draws mainly on Street Fighter II.
Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are estranged fighters who get pulled back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. The two were once training partners, and their friendship has since frayed into rivalry and distance. Their strained brotherhood drives the emotional story.
The tournament hides something darker. It is a cover for a dangerous conspiracy involving M. Bison and the criminal organisation Shadaloo. Chun-Li, who works with Interpol, has a personal revenge motive against Bison. The rest of the roster fills out the tournament. The cast includes Jason Momoa, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. Vidyut Jammwal plays Dhalsim, which will interest Indian audiences. Momoa's Blanka is searching for his mother, one of several side threads running alongside the main plot.
I'm leaving out the ending, as I haven't confirmed it, and I'd rather not give you spoilers I can't verify.
Review
What works
The film looks good. Cinematographer Ken Seng soaks it in artificial film grain and '80s-style neon lighting that suits the anime-ready character designs. Director Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) clearly loves the arcade era and builds the 1993 setting around it. The soundtrack gets praise too: one reviewer calls it amazing, leaning hard into the action-movie concept.
The tone is deliberately knowing and campy. The strongest element is the nudge-nudge way the film approaches its characters and material. Reviewers who enjoyed it say it works best if you go in wanting fun. One calls it a blast for anyone who loves the look of '90s action movies or wants a take that doesn't take itself too seriously, and says the leads give their roles everything they have. After two earlier adaptations widely panned as among the worst films of their time, a version that is at least entertaining counts as progress.
What doesn't
The main complaint is overcrowding. The film is too overstuffed to give anyone besides Ken, Ryu, and a little of Chun-Li any real attention. The same review says it feels edited to within an inch of its life, jumping between plot threads so fast that none of them settle. One moment is brotherly drama between Ryu and Ken, and the next is Chun-Li's revenge plot, with little room for either to land.
Tone is the other sticking point. The film can't decide what it is. It feels locked in its own messy battle of identity, much like the feuding brothers at its centre. The self-aware approach suits casual viewers but may upset fans who wanted something more reverential to the game. If you want a dark, gritty Street Fighter, this isn't it. The campiness is part of the point.
Critical reception
Reviews are mixed and lean middling. Flickering Myth gave it two stars, while Canadian Gamer-style outlets were far warmer. The split mostly comes down to expectations. Critics who wanted a coherent, character-driven film were let down, and those who wanted a loud, colourful ride were pleased.
Verdict
Street Fighter (2026) is a stylish, uneven, often silly adaptation that has fun with its source material but doesn't give most of its famous fighters enough to do. It looks great, sounds great, and moves fast, sometimes too fast. It's worth seeing on the big screen if you're a fan or want a light, nostalgic night out, and probably not if you want strong storytelling. As a rough rating, it sits around 2.5 to 3 out of 5. It is better than the 1994 and 2009 films, though that is a low bar.
